The Grandmother Eleavator Pitch.

If your grandmother get's your elevator pitch and likes it, you are ready to pitch your startup. I wish I could tell you who was the first smart guy that spouted this advice. I think it’s the best rule I know to help entrepreneurs steady their focus and hone their entire business plan and not just their pitch. A few years ago, I attended a tech meetup event in New York and watched a lively dialog between Derek Webster, CEO of Cardflight, host, and organizer of this meetup and keynote speaker Ryder Kessler, CEO, and Founder of DipJar. Ryder’s company has a great mission. As stated on their website, [DipJar is] “enabling cashless generosity for those who love to give.” Stated more succinctly

Covid19 - how to flatten your own own personal curve.

Our lives are not a straight line every increasing in happiness, success, or any other material or spiritual measure. Nor is the arc of life unimodal; we do not hit our single peak and then begin a perennial stage of decline. Life is full of ups and downs. By now, we are familiar with the need to “flatten the curve”. But there is another statistical curve to measure yourself. Let’s call this curve the “arc of life.” Where are you on a personal life curve? A picture is still worth a thousand words. So thankfully, epidemiologist has made it very simple for everyone to understand that the longer it takes for coronavirus to spread into the population, the more time hospitals gain to prepare. The

The Best Ingredients For An Entrepreneur Sandwich!

Is a food truck selling deli food in Denver so special? It is when the sandwiches are made by Mike Gropper, a veteran with a mission and motto "Supporting Veterans One Sandwich at a Time." Starting a business is hard stuff. The hurdles, daily highs and lows, and self-doubt will test your mettle. Mike had no formal business background. Previously he was a cook in the army and a schoolteacher, but he had the “Right Stuff”. Mike was undaunted by this overwhelming challenge. How did he do it? If you want to make a deli sandwich, it's easy. The ingredients are bread (good rye bread makes for a strong foundation), a protein (corn beef is excellent), and a tasty condiment (mustard is never a bad ch

Do you have Entrepeneur DNA?

I recently took a personality test given by the Founder Institute, a worldwide organization focused on incubating very early-stage startups. All its applicants, which total over 4,000 entrepreneurs to date, are required to take the test. According to Adeo Ressi, CEO and founder, it’s an excellent predictor of how well its applicants will ultimately perform as entrepreneurs. I started to think about the question, is there an entrepreneur DNA? Is there a marker that can predict success for you and your company? It’s an interesting question. Indeed, if we knew the determinants of success, it would help both the entrepreneur and investors. What are the characteristics and personality types? Is i

Start What You Will Finish!

Why is it so difficult for most of us to start new things? Like many people right now you may have too much time on your hands. You may be out of work or just unsure when the shoe will drop. How do I start something new at this point in my life? What should I do next? Even if you are “safe” in your job, it’s a good time to assess your career and where you want to go. As an entrepreneur or CEO, perhaps your only chance to survive in this environment is to start a new project, a new line of business, or plan a new strategy based on what the market will look like in the next 6 to 12 months. Often, we don’t start something new because the challenge of completing it is so daunting. Self-help and
