When it comes to the adjective, the hyphenated form (back-seat) is about as common as backseat in 21st-century English, so either is correct. For newer compounds such this, though, the less adventurous hyphenated forms are safer in formal writing.
Hey. Yeah you, in the backseat! I know you're trying to pretend like you're not listening to whatever it is Mom or Dad have droning on through the car speakers, but you should listen up. It might not seem terribly important at the moment, but there are a lot of us working on the other side of that radio, and some day, you might too.
Some of us report the news, it's true. Others produce web pages. Some cut and clip audio, others edit text, and others even shoot video and take pictures (which you can't see from your backseat perch).
Four of the 13 SUVs received good ratings for backseat safety: the Ford Explorer, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Subaru Ascent and the Tesla Model Y. Three others received marginal ratings: the Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas.
Imagine how annoyed, even angry, you are by now. You were late for work before, now it's worse. But when you knock on the car window, the woman looks up at you with tears in her eyes. You look in the backseat and see a baby turning blue. Everything just changed, didn't it Your anger has been replaced with empathy for the woman and a desire to help the baby, right
And as Dr. Patrick Friman, Vice President of Boys Town Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, tells us in his TED Talk, looking for the baby in the backseat when people display problematic behavior ultimately makes us more empathetic.
Challenge yourself to step back and accept that you don't know why people behave the way they do. Imagine the baby that might be in their backseat. Chances are, at the end of the week, you'll feel better about others, the world and yourself.
COWETA COUNTY, Ga. - A Powder Springs mother is in big trouble with the law after officers find five unbuckled children in the backseat of the car she was driving. Coweta County deputies say she led them on a high-speed chase down Interstate 85, in the rain at over 120 mph.
Safety is the motivation behind the law. State police say, not only are backseat passengers at risk of being ejected from the car in an accident, but rear passengers without seat belts can be a danger to those in the front seat.
\"Twenty-five bucks if they catch you. I'd rather for the police to catch criminals, catch those who are shooting our babies, catch people who are shooting these guns. Don't catch people in the backseat of a car without a seatbelt on,\" said Davis.

When she got to Salt Lake, she started running stop lights to get away from him, but he would run right through them too. So when she got to her driveway she pulled in really fast, and this guy pulled in right behind her. She just laid on the horn, and her husband came running out. Just then, the guy jumped out of the car, and her husband ran over and said, \"What the hell's goin' on here\" So he grabbed the guy, and his wife said, \"This man's followed me all the way from Ogden.\" The man said, \"I followed your wife because I was going to work, and as I got into my car, I noticed when I turned my lights on, a man's head bob down in her back seat.\" So the husband went over to her backseat, opened the door, and pulled this guy from out of the backseat.
I am passing this along because I know of a incident similar to this. My girlfriend was getting some gas and when she attempted to return to her car the gas station attendant starting yelling at her and telling her she did not pay yet. When she went back in to argue about having already paid the attendant told her he just wanted to get her back in because he saw someone crawl in the backseat of her car, and that he had already called the police. So it's worth taking to heart.
Though there have been rapes wherein the attacker hid in the back seat of an automobile, they are rather rare occurrences (one example of which took place in the Chicago area in March 2013). As for carjackings, in the overwhelming majority of them the assailant opens the door and gets into the car while the driver is behind the wheel; there's little of this \"lurking in the backseat\" bit.
Research shows that one true case of \"The Killer in the Backseat\" did occur in 1964 in New York City, when an escaped murderer hid in the backseat of a car. The car, ironically, belonged to a police detective who shot the man. Though the differences between the legend and the true occurrence are vast (the real occurrence did not feature a lone female; it didn't necessarily happen at night; and no third person was involved), the legend may have sprung out of this real incident:
The warnings that the woman misunderstood as aggression lead to a surprising turn of events: her fear was misdirected and the danger came from somewhere much closer than she realized, the backseat of her own car!
Thus, backseat passengers under the age of eighteen years old must wear a seat belt. But once someone reaches their eighteenth birthday, Georgia law allows them to ride in the back seat without a seat belt.
Overall, backseat passengers who wear a seat belt reduce their chances of dying in a car accident by 55-75%. The reduction in injuries and deaths justifies wearing a seat belt in the backseat, even for those 18 and over.

A survey in the United Kingdom found that 51% of respondents report that backseat drivers are their top distraction when behind the wheel. It also found that these drivers were 60% more likely to be involved in a collision when driving with passengers.
The term 'Backseat driver' (sometimes also spelled 'back seat driver') originated in the United States in the early 1920s. This happened as transportation via automobiles became more common, and wealthy people started using a private chauffeur who sat in the driving seat and got the directions from the person in the back seat. The first recorded figurative use of the term was in the 1921 December edition of the Bismarck Tribune: \"A backseat driver is the pest who sits on the rear cushions of a motor car and tells the driver what to do...\" 781b155fdc
